15.10.2019 – The Department of Materials Test Engineering welcomes from October 15, 2019, Mrs. Ronja Scholz as Group Leader “Composites” and Mr. Alexander Koch as Group Leader “Light Metals” within the steering committee. A special thanks to Mr. Philipp Wittke for his dedication to steering committee and good luck for his industrial career from February 1, 2020, after successful finalization of his doctorate.

13.05.2019 – On May 9, 2019, the Department of Materials Test Engineering, in cooperation with project partners, exhibited the successfully completed "PRISCA" project at the Innovation Day 2019 in Berlin. During guided tours of the VDI and the AiF the demonstrators and project results were presented by Daniel Hülsbusch and discussed with visitors. The Department of Materials Test Engineering would like to thank the AiF for the invitation to the Innovation Day.

 

Signing of a MOU between TU Dortmund University and MEPhI University in Moscow

08.04.2019 – On April 8, 2019, the TU Dortmund University and the National Research University for Nuclear Technology (MEPhI), Moscow, signed a Memorandum of Understanding, which strengthens the cooperation of the Department of Materials Testing, TU Dortmund with the Chair of Materials Science, MEPhI. The agreement was signed during a visit of the Minister for Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, Ms. Isabel Pfeiffer-Poensgen, with the participation of representatives of the Rectorate of the TU Dortmund.

04.04.2019 – On April 4, 2019, a roundtable with the participation of the Department of Materials Testing, TU Dortmund was held at the St. Petersburg Polytechnic University on the topic "North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany) - Russian Federation: Opportunities for the development of the German market using the example of North Rhine-Westphalia and development of bilateral cooperation between industry and science in the field of new materials".

18.02.2019 – The Department of Materials Test Engineering congratulates its external Ph.D. Mr. Tobias Schmack to the successful doctorate exam about topic "Development of a holistic method for determining the strain rate-dependent behavior of fiber-reinforced polymers".

 

Focused Ion Beam milling with Scanning Electron Microscopy (FIB-SEM)

17.01.2019 – The Department of Materials Test Engineering (WPT) presented the German Research Foundation (DFG) a convincing concept at the tendering of large scale equipment. Only ten university departments in Germany have a FIB-SEM in their laboratory equipment. The FIB-SEM with 3-dimensional backscatter electron diffraction system (3D-EBSD), energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (3D-EDX) and integrated nanoindenter is technically up to date and unique in its existing equipment and device specification. The FIB-SEM offers the possibility to understand and explore the processes on a micro- and nano-scale basis and interpret the results in a far wider context than with conventional analysis methods. The FIB-SEM strengthens the profile “Production Engineering” of the technical university in Dortmund and gives in combination with the whole laboratory and analysis equipment the WPT an internationally exclusive feature.

 

X-ray diffraction system

30.11.2018 – The Department of Materials Test Engineering (WPT) received funding within the Major Research Instrumentation Program of the German Research Foundation (DFG) for a X-ray diffraction system by Bruker of D8 Discover type. This non-destructive analysis instrument enables to characterize residual stress states, textures and phase compositions of different materials and compounds.

29.10.2018 – From October 25 to 26, 2018, the Department of Materials Test Engineering hosted the meeting of the DGM/DVM-AG "Materialermüdung". The technical committee is mainly engaged in the characterization of material behavior under cyclic loading.

4th CIRP Conference on Surface Integrity

07.08.2018 – From July 11 to 13, 2018, the 4th CIRP Conference on Surface Integrity took place at Tianjin (China). Within the conference, Mr. Jan Nickel, M.Sc. (ISF), and Mr. Nikolas Baak, M.Sc. (WPT), were honored with the Best Paper Award for their technical contribution “Influence of the deep hole drilling process and sulphur content on the fatigue strength of AISI 4140 steel components".

 

7th International Conference on Fracture Fatigue and Wear

16.07.2018 – From July 9 to 10, 2018, the 7th International Conference on Fracture Fatigue and Wear took place at the University of Ghent in Belgium. Within the conference, Mr. Mustafa Mamduh Mustafa Awd, M.Sc., was honored with the Best Student Paper Award for his technical contribution “Comparative study of defect-based and plastic damage-based approaches for fatigue lifetime calculation of selective laser-melted AlSi12”.

Meeting of the DGM technical committee “Hybrid Materials and Structures”

07.03.2018 – From February 19 to 20, 2018, the Department of Materials Test Engineering hosted the meeting of the DGM technical committee "Hybrid Materials and Structures". The technical committee is mainly engaged in the production and characterization of hybrid structures out of composite materials and metals for the development of new lightweight potential.

 

High-speed testing system

09.02.2018 – The Department of Materials Test Engineering (WPT) received funding within the Major Research Instrumentation Program of the German Research Foundation (DFG) for a high-speed testing system by ZwickRoell of HTM 5020 type. The testing system is used for rapid tensile and puncture tests with a maximum force of 50 kN. With test speeds of up to 72 km/h the crash safety of materials and components at very high strain rates can be determined. A maximum piston stroke of 250 mm enables the testing of particularly ductile materials.

 

Publication in „Jahresmagazin Werkstofftechnik 2017“

17.07.2017 – The Department of Materials Test Engineering has published an article in “Jahresmagazin Ingenieurwissenschaften 2017”. This issue of the established publication series focuses on materials engineering with the topic „Steel and aluminum - high-strength materials in competition“.
Editor is the „Institut für wissenschaftliche Veröffentlichungen“ in cooperation with „Wissenschaftlicher Arbeitskreis e.V. der Universitäts-Professoren der Werkstofftechnik (WAW)“.
The annual magazine presents important contributions of the WAW-members regarding the development of promising steels and aluminum alloys.

 

7th International Conference on “Durability and Fatigue” of the Engineering Integrity Society

07.07.2017 – From July 3 to 5, 2017, the 7th International Conference on “Durability and Fatigue” of the Engineering Integrity Society took place at the Downing College in Cambridge (UK). Within the conference, Ms. Anke Schmiedt, M.Sc., was honored with the Peter Watson-Award for her technical contribution “Corrosion fatigue assessment of brazed AISI 304/BNI-2 joints in synthetic exhaust gas condensate”.

 

1st Conference of DVM AK „Additiv gefertigte Bauteile und Strukturen“

09.01.2017 – On November 2 and 3, 2016, the 1st Conference of DVM Workgroup “Additiv gefertigte Bauteile und Strukturen” took place at the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) in Berlin. Within the conference, Mr. Jochen Tenkamp, M.Sc., was honored with the 3rd place of DVM Junior Award for his technical contribution “Einfluss prozessinduzierter Defekte auf das Ermüdungsverhalten additiv-gefertigter AlSi12-Strukturen bei hohen und sehr hohen Lastspielzahlen”.
